How to play
Basketball is a team sport consisting of five players and two teams. The aim of each team is to score in the opposing team’s basket.

Players will try to prevent the other team from getting the ball or scoring, by keeping the ball within their team and defending their own basket.

Players are not permitted to run with the ball, to kick it or to hit it with their fists. This offence is known as a travel.

The team that has scored the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Scoring

A goal is scored when a player throws the ball into the basket of the opposing team.

Most goals are worth two points however a goal shot from the three point arc will score three points.

Fouls

A foul is a violation of the rules. A player guilty of unnecessary personal contact such as touching, bumping, shoving or running into another player will be awarded a foul. Once a team has accumulated four fouls in a quarter, the opposing team is awarded two free throws for any other fouls accumulated in that half.

Free throw

If a player is fouled while shooting a goal, they will be rewarded one free throw and if they score the goal, it will count. If they do not score the goal, either two or three free throws will be rewarded depending on where the player was standing at the time of the infringement.

If a player not in the act of shooting a goal is fouled, they will be rewarded two free throws.

Shot clock

A player has only 24 seconds to shoot for a goal once they gain possession of the ball. If they fail to do so, they will lose possession of the ball.

Equipment

The ball is orange in colour and has an outer casing of genuine leather. The circumference is 74.9-78cm and the weight is 567-650 grams. It is inflated to a pressure so that when the ball is dropped from a height of 1.8 metres it will rebound to 1.2-1.4 metres.

Rules
l Basketball is a fast, exciting game played by two teams of 5 players, who may pass, throw, roll, bat or dribble the ball. The object of the game is to score points by throwing the ball into the opposing team's basket.
l A goal is scored when the ball enters the basket from above and passes through the net. Goals from inside the field area count as 2 points, goals from outside the 3 point area are counted as 3 points. And free throws are counted as 1 point.
